    Cineplex Odeon Corp. merges with the US-based Loews Theatres, creating Loews Cineplex Entertainment, one of the world’s largest motion picture theatrical exhibition companies

    Galaxy Entertainment Inc. is founded by Ellis Jacob and Stephen Brown. The company creates state-of-the-art entertainment destinations for mid-size Canadian cities that historically were underserved.

    Cineplex Galaxy LP is created with the merger of Galaxy Entertainment Inc. and the Canadian assets of Cineplex Odeon Corporation. Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund is created and the IPO is priced at CDN$10.00 per unit on the Toronto Stock Exchange, (symbol CGX.UN).

    Viacom Inc. announces its intent to divest the Famous Players theatre chain
  • May 27, 2005
    Cineplex Galaxy LP receives a consent order signed by the Canadian Competition Bureau allowing the purchase of Famous Players
  • June 10, 2005
    A Purchase Agreement between Viacom Inc. and Cineplex Galaxy LP is signed and the intent to purchase Famous Players for approximately $464 million in cash and approximately $36 million in lease obligations is announced
  • June 29, 2005
    To finance the acquisition, Cineplex Galaxy LP announces a $215 million public offering. An announcement is also made indicating the intent to sell the real estate interests in four theatre locations in a sale-leaseback agreement for $67 million to RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust.
  • July 22, 2005
    Cineplex Galaxy LP’s purchase of Famous Players from Viacom is complete, as well as the closure of the equity and debt financing. Formal divestiture process commences for sale of 34 theatres.

    Cineplex Galaxy LP completes the sale of real estate interest in four theatre locations to RioCan REIT for $67 million

    Cineplex Galaxy LP announces sale of 27 theatres and 202 screens to Empire Theatres Ltd. for approximately $83 million

    Cineplex Entertainment announces the sale of seven theatres with 78 screens in the province of Quebec to Fortune Cinemas for $2 million
  • January 24, 2007
    Cineplex Entertainment GTA launch of first-ever Canadian entertainment rewards program, SCENE, in partnership with Scotiabank. As part of the agreement, five theatres are to be re-branded to Scotiabank Theatres. Re-branding of Paramount Toronto Theatre to Scotiabank Theatre Toronto is announced.

    Oaktree Capital Management sells their interest in the Fund along with a portion of the units held by Onex Corporation. This resulted in a reduction of Onex’s effective controlling interest in Cineplex Entertainment LP to 23.7%.

    Board of Directors approves increase to Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund cash distributions to $1.20 per unit
  • May 2, 2007
    National launch of SCENE program as well as the re-branding of three more theatres to the Scotiabank theatre brand: Scotiabank Theatre Montreal, Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver and Scotiabank Theatre Edmonton

    Cineplex Entertainment announces acquisition of Cinema City chain. Three theatres are acquired.
  • September 21, 2007
    Cineplex Entertainment announces the re-branding of Paramount Chinook to a Scotiabank brand as part of the agreement with the bank. Scotiabank Theatre Chinook is the last flagship location to be re-branded.
  • December 7, 2007
    SilverCity Oakville Cinemas, Canada’s largest digital cinema complex opens. This theatre is also the first theatre to incorporate the “Backlot” concept which includes bowling, billiards and a bar/lounge, in addition to VIP auditoriums and a VIP lounge, the Cineplex Kids Club (a child-minding service) and Xtras (the Cineplex store).
