In 1985, Wechsler became President of the Motion Picture Division of Northcorp, a company created by Frank Yablans and the Producers Sales Organization. He left Northcorp to develop and produce motion pictures and manage artists. He co-wrote the story for the film Made in U.S.A. () which was directed by Ken Friedman for Hemdale. He then co-produced Paul Mones The Beat (1988) with Julia Phillips and John Kilik for Vestron. For Avenue Entertainment, he developed and co-produced Gus Van Sant's striking Drugstore Cowboy (1989) and then served as executive producer on Steven Soderbergh's "sex, lies and videotape" (1989), the surprise winner of the Palm'dor at that year's Cannes Film Festival. Remaining true to form, Wechsler also co-produced Robert Altman's reflexive and darkly satirical The Player (1992), and also the offbeat Michael Tolkin-directed The New Age (1994).
