Marvel turns 'Iron Man' into gold

"Iron Man" was pure gold at the box office. The Marvel Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the guy in the metal suit, hauled in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a nonsequel.

      • 1969: The Turtles play at the White House at the invitation of Tricia Nixon. Stories later circulate that the band snorted cocaine on Abraham Lincoln's desk.
      • 1970: Lynyrd Skynyrd first performs "Free Bird" in public, at the grand opening of the Jacksonville Art Museum in Jacksonville, Fla.
      • 1984: Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and Jim Kerr of Simple Minds get married. They have since divorced.
