Who would have believed four crime-fighting turtles named after famous Italian artists would become so popular?
Back in 1984, two comic book artists created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and since then they’ve gone on to star in comic books, TV shows and movies, and you can buy TMNT action figures, videogames and lunch boxes.

You know them as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. They live in the sewers under New York City, and while the city sleeps they come out to battle criminals and evildoers using their ninja warrior skills. Their greatest enemy is a nasty ninja master named Shredder.
In their new movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Shredder has been defeated and the Turtles have gone their separate ways. Leonardo is busy travelling the world, Donatello and Michelangelo are entertaining kids at birthday parties, while Raphael continues to fight crime on his own.
The Turtles’ split has saddened the group’s teacher and adoptive father, Splinter. And it’s Splinter who discovers a rich businessman named Max Winter has secretly formed an army of ancient, evil creatures, and plans to use them to take over the world.

Now it’s Splinter’s job to bring the Turtles back together and prepare them for the battle of their lives. Let’s hope they can stop fighting amongst themselves long enough to fight the bad guys!

Meet Your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
They may look similar, but each Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle possesses a distinct personality and fighting style. Here’s what you need to know about each of these green-skinned heroes.
Michelangelo
Mask Colour: Orange
Weapon: The nunchaku. A nunchaku is made up of two short sticks linked together by an even shorter chain. Michelangelo keeps a pair with him at all times.
Personality: Michelangelo is the most laid-back and easygoing of the turtles. He’s funny and loves to read comics and eat pizza.
Leonardo
Mask Colour: Blue
Weapon: The katana. Katana is the Japanese word for sword, and Leonardo’s two katanas are the same type worn by samurai warriors.
Personality: Leonardo is the unofficial leader of the TMNTs. The other turtles admire his bravery and quick decision-making skills. He also has a very strong sense of honour and justice.
Raphael
Mask Colour: Red
Weapon: The sai. The sai is a Japanese weapon that has a long dagger coming out of the middle of the handle with two short daggers on either side. Raphael carries two of them.
Personality: Usually the first turtle into a fight, Raphael is aggressive, angry and sarcastic.
Donatello
Mask Colour: Purple
Weapon: The bo. A bo is a long staff, usually made of bamboo or wood.
Personality: The smartest of the group, Donatello is a scientist, inventor and knows a thing or two about computers. He’s also the least violent of the turtles.
