Extra! Extra! Read All About Kit!

A 10-year-old girl dreams of becoming a reporter in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

Kit Kittredge is such a doll. No, seriously. She really is a doll. An 18-inch doll, with a vinyl head and a body made of cloth. She’s also the star of a series of books and has her own clothing line.

That’s because Kit’s part of the American Girl line of dolls, books and accessories. And now, she’s the star of her very own movie, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. You may have seen other movies based on the American Girl dolls, like Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front and Samantha: An American Girl Holiday. But those movies were made for TV — this one’s made for the big screen, so Kit will definitely get her close-up!

If you’re not familiar with the American Girl dolls, each one is supposed to be a 10-year-old girl who was born at a fascinating time in American history. Kit’s story takes place in the 1930s, when the Great Depression dominated everyone’s lives. That was an era when most people didn’t have very much money and it was difficult to make ends meet.

Kit lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she wants to write for the local newspaper. But what can a 10-year-old contribute to a newspaper?

A lot, thinks Kit. For instance, she can write about the Depression from a child’s perspective. The bad times hit families hardest after all, with lots of parents losing their jobs and having a terrible time trying to put food on the table.

Will Kit get her byline and become a star reporter? Or will she have to be satisfied with going to school
and playing with her friends?
