The Spiderwick Chronicles
Dangerous Reading!
In The Spiderwick Chronicles a boy finds a book that helps him see invisible creatures. But what if those creatures don’t want to be seen?
Look around you. Do you see anything?
Flying fairies? Nasty trolls? Beautiful unicorns? Even though you can’t
see any of those creatures, they do exist, at least according to the
book Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around
You. It’s also the book that causes a whole lot of trouble for the
three Grace children — twin brothers Jared and Simon, and their older
sister Mallory.
Their problems begin when they, along with their mom, move into the Spiderwick Estate, their Uncle Arthur’s vacant Victorian mansion. The kids aren’t thrilled with
their new home — it’s surrounded by woods, it’s gloomy and full of
strange rooms. One of the rooms, a study, contains a large trunk that
Jared opens. Inside the trunk he finds his uncle’s field guide, however
there’s a note attached to the guide warning that whomever opens the
book will suffer a terrible fate!
Jared (who’s more adventurous than his studious twin Simon) dives right
in, and before you know it he can see the magical beings around him,
including brownies, fairies, boggarts, sprites and goblins. However, an
evil ogre named Mulgarath doesn’t want a human knowing all about his
world and demands Jared hand over the guide or he will harm him and his
family.
But Jared is no pushover, and he’s determined to hang onto the most amazing book he’s ever read, no matter what the cost!
