Go Behind the Scenes with Coraline
Coraline was filmed in 3D using a technique called “stop-motion animation,” which means the figures you see on screen are photographed for a single frame, and then moved just a bit before being photographed once again. This is done over, and over, and over again. When the film plays, the series of frames are run in order — and very quickly — which fools your eyes into believing they’re seeing movement. Check out these amazing photos of Coraline’s stop-motion animators at work.
1) Lead animator Travis Knight checks the framing of a close-up on Coraline before filming.
2) Animator Theresa Drilling fixes Coraline’s hair between takes as Wybie and many Scottie Dogs look on.
3) Rigger Oliver Jones prepares the bike-riding Wybie for his shot.
4) A digital camera captures a kitchen-table conversation between Coraline and her Other Father.
