The Spain native, raised in Costa Rica, Mexico, France and eventually settling with his family in Port Hope, Ontario, exploded on the literary scene in 2001 when his book "Life of Pi," won the Man Booker Prize. The story followed the innately curious Piscine Patel, or Pi, a young boy growing up in India who explores his own spirituality by investigating various, sometimes contradictory, religions, to the ire of his father, a zookeeper.

When his family decides to move to Canada via boat, a storm hits and Pi is shipwrecked for 227 days, along with a few animals from the zoo, namely a tiger who goes by the handle Richard Parker.

We had the chance to sit down with Yann Martel to discuss working with director Ang Lee on the movie adaptation of his fantasy adventure novel, letting go and trusting who he calls a fantastic filmmaker.
