Now that the dust has settled on the first major awards ceremony of the year - although we presume some enterprising celebs were up very late celebrating - it's time to pick it apart.
Despite what we thought of Ricky Gervais' fairly neutral hosting job, we're not the type of folks who just focus on the negative.
If you tuned into the 69th annual Golden Globes Sunday night, you would have witnessed a lot of good amidst the bad, from Tina Fey's photobomb to George Clooney's blush-inducing Michael Fassbender joke and the mere presence of Salma Hayek, which is its own reason for celebration.
So, let's dig in to the highs and lows of the 2012 Golden Globes!
Best joke from the host
This proved to be tougher than it would seem, since Gervais came out guns blazing and then sputtered out, but I think the quip that had me howling the most was his earnest (and unrehearsed?) aside with Johnny Depp, who was there as a presenter. Having torn Depp's Golden Globe-nominated The Tourist a new one last year, Gervais couldn't help but go there again, confronting the actor thusly: "I have a question for you. Be honest...have you seen The Tourist?" And both Gervais' Cheshire Cat grin and Depp's genuine acknowledgment that okay, that was a good one, made for a delightfully funny moment that I'm not sure we ever reached again.
Best penis joke
This was one mind-in-the-gutter ceremony - not that we're complaining - and we don't know if it was the fact that Michael Fassbender was in the room that had everyone eluding to male members but between Gervais, Seth Rogen, Tina Fey and Jane Lynch, and even your dapper boyfriend George Clooney, presenters and winners couldn't help but make allusions to, ahem, the mighty sword. But our fave, if you're wont to rate such a thing and we are, has got to be Clooney's assertion to Fassbender that if he can play golf with his hands behind his back, then more power to him. We think we saw the Irish actor blush and that's something considering what he has to do in Steve McQueen's Shame.

Best photobomb
Let's say it together: God bless Tina Fey. The charming, self-deprecating and funny actress/writer/producer was up against pal and former SNL cast mate Amy Poehler for Best Actress in a TV Comedy and when the nominees were being announced, Fey slowly leaned over, making sure she was in Poehler's shot, who was absolutely clueless to the historic moment that was taking place. It was simple but oh so effective and produced a thousand GIFs, reinforcing how sometimes, we love the internet so hard.
Most overacting at the podium
Listen, Paula Patton looked all kinds of amazing and held her own in actioner Ghost Protocol so it's a wonder why, when she was presenting with Melissa McCarthy, she shifted into high school play mode and over-pronounced and frustratingly enunciated every last syllable in a way that felt embarrassing and unnecessary. It was hard to watch and McCarthy, a breakout star and funny lady, didn't really fare much better.
Best celeb bleep
It took a while, but Gervais finally let an expletive fly when he was introducing presenters Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas, admitting he couldn't "understand a f***king word they were saying" and truth be told, there wasn't much of a payoff with that one. It was admittedly much funnier to hear the sound drop out of on Meryl Streep, who seemed to be the only one surprised when she won for The Iron Lady and couldn't read her speech, revealing" Oh s**t, I forgot my glasses" as George Clooney and other celebs tried to get the lenses to Streep onstage, only to abandon the effort after the Meryl, ever a pro, winged it. Before she got played off, that is. Tsk, tsk HFPA.
Best sex hair
It was a year when a lot of ladies seemed to be taking a page out of Cameron Diaz's Big Book of Beach Hair and that tousled, just-got-out-of-bed hair looked especially odd when paired with a gorgeous gown. But for our money, we thought Emily Blunt, looking bored, unimpressed or maybe just tired, trotted out on stage with a lemon-yellow dress and wild hair, prompting us to wonder if hubby John Krasinski was backstage...
Best technical issue
When the teleprompter spazzed out during Rob Lowe and Julianne Moore's time at the podium to introduce Miss Golden Globe Rainey Qualley, the red-headed actress' coping mechanism was to giggle and smile nervously but Lowe proved to be the real pro, claiming that moments like these were "why we love this evening," nearly doing the Arsenio and commending Moore on her cold read once she was handed a script and basically maintaining his cool under pressure. That is, literally, the best way to handle these things.

Best prop of the night
Before you lambaste me for calling a dog a prop, let's just all agree that bringing a dog onstage, in this case Jack Russell terrier Uggie of The Artist, is an undeniably good idea and turned everyone's hearts into mush because, GUYS, A SWEET DOG DOING TRICKS. Sometimes, we are so easily amused.
Worst prop of the night
It's a three-way tie between Thomas Jane's fedora, Madonna's single glove and Robert Downey Jr.'s newfound sense of gravitas. When you can't reliably depend on RDJ to bring a certain arrogant zing and launch a well-worded jab at the host, it's truly a loss for us all. Bring back the sarcasm, Iron Man!
Most missed nominee
In a year where the talented homegrown looker was nominated for two Golden Globes, it never crossed my mind that Ryan Gosling wouldn't be in attendance, rocking some fitted suit in a brave colour, throwing bedroom eyes towards the multitude of cameras and giving every other best dressed contender a run for his money. But when I asked of the Twitterverse if anyone had spotted the babely Gosling, I was quickly informed that the face that launched a thousand tumblrs would not be seen in Beverly Hills because he was filming Nicolas Winding Refn's next movie in Bangkok. Talk about your crushing news.
