The voting body that makes up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts in Sciences announced the newest slate of members it has invited to join the prestigious group, who, among other things, are the people responsible for determining Academy Award nominees and winners.
Each year, the Academy gets its share of flack around awards season when the hip, indie flicks get shut out of traditional categories with many lamenting the so-called “boys club” and “old white men” that make up the majority of the membership body. The Academy certainly looks to be freshening up its image with the latest crop of member inductees who are younger and more diverse than seemingly ever.
New Academy members cover a multitude of categories including actors, directors, editors, musicians and composers, casting directors, producers, documentarians, and more groups that cover all branches of the awards categories.
Making the cut this year are recent nominees and winners Lupita Nyong’o, Michael Fassbender, Canadians Denis Villeneuve and Jean-Marc Vallee, musicians Pharell and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, directors Thomas Vinterberg, Mark and Jay Duplass and David Gordon Green.
Other notable invitees are Steve Coogan who was added into the writers group, Captain Phillips’ nominee Barkhad Abdi, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Cillian Murphy, Josh Hutcherson, Clancy Brown, Jason Staham, Clark Gregg, Rob Riggle and David Strahairn. And finally, years after he hosted the Academy Awards ceremony, Chris Rock has been invited to join the Academy.
