After Paul Thomas Anderson took home the best director prize and Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman shared a best actor win at the Venice Film Festival, The Master got its North American premiere when it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

And even though it's been a few weeks now, we're still mulling over the beautiful and terrifying imagery, trying to make sense of Jonny Greenwood's haunting score and piecing together how Phoenix pulled off playing a character who has the unpredictability and latent threat of a caged animal and the heart of a man just looking for love as he tries to find his way in post-WWII America.

The loyal, powerful woman behind the men is played by Amy Adams and she revealed to us why PT Anderson wanted her in almost every scene, what it was like seeing Phoenix transform into a volatile man and how she surrendered herself to the process when we sat down for a chat.

The Master hits select Cineplex theatres September 28.
