Putting an inventive spin on the often tumultuous relationship between teenage daughters and their mothers, Pixar brings us Brave, where feisty Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), she of independent spirit and equally wild hair, fights with her mother about most things but really can't see eye-to-eye when it comes to a marriage that she doesn't feel interested in or ready for.

We sat down with director Mark Andrews, who wrote the script with writer-director Brenda Chapman, and producer Katherine Sarafian to find out where this Scottish tale of rebellion and tradition came from and if animating Merida's wild red locks was an animator's dream or nightmare.

Watch the interview before Brave, featuring the voices of Billy Connelly, Emma Thompson, Craig Ferguson and Julie Walters, hits Cineplex theatres June 22.
