As your trusty, resident movie experts, it only makes sense that we offer our take on who will make the long walk, or short jaunt depending on the seating chart, to the podium come February 26th's Oscar ceremony.
While it isn't even worth debating that Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist is an unstoppable accolade-gathering machine (Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Producer Guild trophies and more among its impressive haul), the acting categories aren't as much of a lock and we're giving members of the Cineplex team - Cineplex Magazine's editor Marni Weisz, dotcom producer Emma Badame and director of film programming Rob Cousins - a chance to predict the outcome of the big night. (Curious about my Oscar predictions? Get 'em here.)

Actor in a leading role |
The momentum seems to have recently swung the way of Jean Dujardin but when all is said and done, the Academy will honour George Clooney with his second Oscar for his excellent (though not career best) performance in The Descendants. | Not the best performance of the year, or even the best of his career, but George Clooney will win for The Descendants. | George Clooney. This is the year the king is crowned. |
| Actor in a supporting role | As a man who'll be damned if he's going to let a little thing like death get in the way of his new-found freedom, Christopher Plummer makes his Beginners role a stand-out in a long and impressive career. | The Academy will finally give Christopher Plummer (Beginners) his statue. |
Christopher Plummer. In a category that tends to reward career achievement, it’s great to see a performance that deserves the recognition as well. |
| Actress in a leading role |
Though up against the mighty Meryl, after her win at the SAG Awards, Viola Davis is a force to be reckoned with. | Sorry Viola Davis, I say Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. The Academy loves transformations, bio-pics and Streep; it's a trifecta. |
Sorry Meryl, but this Viola Davis had this year's breakout performance. |
| Actress in a supporting role |
With both a Golden Globe and a SAG win under her belt, the odds are clearly on Octavia Spencer’s side. |
All signs point to Octavia Spencer for The Help, a so-so movie that was elevated by a few stellar performances. |
After picking up all the awards this season, Octavia Spencer will add an Oscar to her mantle as well. |
| Achievement in directing |
Michel Hazanavicius. The director, who up until now was known only to those fans of his French-language 007 spoofs, made a film that successfully immersed audiences in another era - and all through actions and not words. | Michel Hazanavicius took home the Directors Guild Award for The Artist, so he’s got the edge over Scorsese in this tight race. |
It’s a toss-up between two directors who used the past to show us the magic of the movies but I think Martin Scorsese has the edge here. |
| Motion picture of the year |
The Artist. The evocative and nostalgic look at the silent
film era has quite rightly taken the movie industry by storm and has
all the momentum going into Oscar night.
|
The Artist will become the first black-and-white film to win Best Picture in more than 50 years. |
The Artist.
The best film of the year no one is seeing! |
| Animated feature film | This category belongs to Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp. Rango for the win. |
Huh?! Tintin's not even nominated? Then gotta go with Rango. |
Rango. An animated lizard western - and it’s not a sequel! |
| Foreign language film | Iran's contender A Separation is the clear front-runner and is poised to win come the big night. |
With apologies to the excellent Canadian drama Monsieur Lazhar, this will go to Iran's A Separation. |
Flag waving aside, Monsieur Lazhar really is one of the best films of the year. |
