Fiennes follows up his first directorial effort, 2011’s modern Shakespeare adaptation Coriolanus with a look at another literary icon, Charles Dickens whom he also plays on screen. The Invisible Woman tells little-known tale of Nelly Ternan (Jones) a young actress-turned-muse for writer Dickens, himself married with a brood of children. Many years Nelly’s senior, the bearded Dickens is taken by the young lady, the daughter of one of his frequent stage actresses, Frances Ternan, played by Fiennes’ English Patient co-star Kristin Scott Thomas.
Nelly, the least talented of Mrs. Ternan’s actress-daughters, is both encouraged and lectured on her bond with Dickens by her high society-seeking mother, allowing the story to drift between the mother-daughter relationship and the love affair.
The film, which premiered at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, is based on the book by Claire Tomalin which details the secret affair between Nelly and Dickens through the height of his career until his death years later.
