When Hollywood has an unexpected hit on its hands - critical praise, major box office bucks and breakout stars all over the place - instead of savouring the moment and letting those involved reap the rewards by exploring new and hitherto unavailable projects, trying to strike gold again is often the order of business, ahem The Hangover Part II, and the shaky results usually speak for themselves.
From Jon Hamm's sentient opining in September that a sequel probably wouldn't interest Kristen Wiig to director Paul Feig confusing the issue when he told Vanity Fair that "[e]veryone is up for it, and yet it's hard to say. Everyone's very busy right now is one of the problems, and kind of doing their own thing, but we're very open to it," to Melissa McCarthy rightly stating it would a "terrible idea" to go ahead with a sequel if the star and writer wasn't involved, the woman at the centre of it all has finally responded. And, thankfully, Wiig is not interested in doing a Bridesmaids sequel.
She very diplomatically told E!Online during the Golden Globes that "[w]e're not planning on doing one. We had a special time making the first one, but we're really excited to try something else."
Of course that doesn't mean Universal won't be going full steam ahead without her but it's good news that Wiig is walking away from this one.
Plus, it's not like girl's plate isn't already full. Still a stand-out player on SNL - have seen Rebecca LeRue?! - she has ensemble dramedy Friends with Kids on the way, not to mention her passion project Imogene and at least five other projects in pre-production.
Now, if only someone in charge has the good sense to let this sleeping dog lie, we can all cling to the memory of Wiig's drunken plane rant and let her make some new hysterical movie moments destined for a future career retrospective montage.
