Avengers cast

It was expected, there had been rumours galore, but that didn't make fans any less excited when it actually happened right in front of their eyes.

The Marvel Studio panel — scheduled to include sneak peeks at 2011's Captain America and Thor — actually began over an hour late following an altercation and assault during an earlier afternoon panel in which one attendee stabbed another with a pen after a dispute over seating in the Hall.

Once the commotion had died down, and after an 8-minute preview of Thor with the main cast and crew, it was time for the main attraction. Studio exec Kevin Feige turned the proceedings over to Samuel L. Jackson (aka Nick Fury) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) to introduce the newly-official main cast of The Avengers.

Downey pledged to the eager audience that The Avengers will be the most ambitious film ever attempted, even more so than Christopher Nolan's current sensation Inception. He then jokingly referenced the earlier attack, asking that “nobody stab anyone” until he'd finished with all the cast introductions.

But who made the casting cut? Well, if you peeked at the pic above, you should already know...but so we're all on the same page, let's run it down:

  • Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
  • Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark
  • Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
  • Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow
  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Chris Evans as Captain America
  • Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
  • Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Incredible Hulk

And last but not least, they brought on the man who will helm the whole enchilada and who, as RDJ said, was someone they knew would get fans approval right off the bat, Joss Whedon. Whedon took a moment to address the crowd amidst the screams and cheers of fans in attendance. "This is The Avengers! A team that is more than the sum of its parts. This cast is more than I could have ever hoped for and I'm going to blow it." So of the fans he asked just two things: "I need your love. I need your support."

The Avengers is set to begin principal shooting in February 2011 and has a release date in 2012. Get ready, people, this one's going to be good.
