If you've ever wondered what a Judd Apatow apocalypse movie would look, sound and feel like, Seeking A Friend For the End of the World, starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley doing her best Manic Pixie Dream Girl, gives you a very good idea.
Written and directed by Lorena Scafaria, the scribe/actress who also penned Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, Carell plays Dodge, a taciturn, regretful dorky type who finds himself confronting the end of the world alone when his wife flees the scene. Luckily his quirky, beautiful neighbour Penny is also spending the last three weeks of existence solo, until, that is, the two misfits decide to band together to chase down unrealized dreams and those they love.
Set to Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere", Seeking A Friend has all the hallmarks of a left-of-centre crowd-pleaser, like previous Carell vehicle Little Miss Sunshine, populated by eccentric characters (Patton Oswalt, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, Gillian Jacobs) and combining heartfelt self-realizations with a road trip while a meteor plummets towards earth.
That means looting, gas masks, car chases and grandiose gestures that don't seem out of place considering the human race is running on borrowed time. An unlikely date movie, sure, but its charms are undeniable.Check out the first trailer below and leave your thoughts in the comment.
