After the Oscar nominations were revealed and we'd had a chance to figure out how incensed, indifferent or elated to be about the results, the conversation inevitably turns to what each actor or director was doing the moment the news dropped and the results are often obvious - sleeping, they ARE announced at 5:30am PST - or appropriately posh - Jessica Chastain was at the Armani Prive show in Paris when she got the call.
In addition to the gleeful reactions of those who have a chance to walk away winners on February 26, Tilda Swinton, unfairly overlooked this year, played off the snub appropriately Swintonly, stating she was just grateful for how far We Need to Talk About Kevin had managed to get: "I wasn't disappointed. I didn't know for hours, but someone was telling me apparently everyone else was disappointed. I am a good gambler, so I knew we were not really going to be in there. I am amazed that our little film got as far as it did." Classy.
Find out how the nominees took the big news.
Christopher Plummer, Best Supporting Actor nominee for Beginners
"I was pleasantly sleeping and someone had the audacity to wake me up."
Gary Oldman, Best Actor nominee for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
"I thought it may elude me. I've always wondered what it was like. I've always peered through the curtain to the front cabin. I feel like I've been invited up. It's a great thing."
Demian Bichir, Best Actor nominee for A Better Life
"A nomination helps. I feel a lot better already." (Bichir was sick with the flu.)
Janet McTeer, Best Supporting Actress nominee for Albert Nobbs
"I was slightly surprised, I confess. I bounced. Gently."
Martin Scorsese, Best Director nominee for Hugo
"I know I've made pictures in the past that are tougher. So, despite my name on the picture, believe me, it's OK to come in the theater I think. Bring the kids! Bring the grandparents - it's OK. I'll be good. I'm not kidding."
Brad Pitt, Best Actor nominee for Moneyball
"I don't care how sugared up they get for school." (Pitt learned of his nomination before making his children a big pancake breakfast.)
Berenice Bejo, Best Supporting Actress nominee for The Artist
"I feel very honored and special really. You can't imagine, to arrive at the Oscars when you arrive so low, and you can't go further than the Oscars."
Director Joseph Cedar, Best Foreign Language film nominee for Footnote
"I'm so talked out. There's just so many ways to describe real happiness."
Director Asghar Farhadi, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Screenplay nominee for A Separation
"People of the world, no matter what language they speak, it seems like art has become the common language all over the world."
