Speaking to a crowd of media members, special guests and a handful of enthusiastic children, director Zack Snyder wastes no time answering the question on most people’s lips about his most recent film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.
Why did the guy who directed vicious comic book pic Watchmen, epic battle flick 300, gory remake Dawn of the Dead and the forthcoming, hyperreal shoot’em-up Sucker Punch take on a film adaptation of a young adult fantasy book series?
Simple - he wanted to make an adventure film.
And judging from the half-dozen scenes screened for the select group at the Time-Warner building in New York City, audiences will certainly be taken for a ride as the wise and the winged soar with majestic grace, feathers ruffling in a manner that looks so life-like it’s easy to forget that it’s CGI making these animals fly.

Snyder, a family man with a large brood himself, is throwing his hat into the children’s movie ring with care, precision and a flair for striking visuals, revealing a true passion for the project and a sense of palpable enthusiasm as he's able to stretch as a filmmaker.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole features voice work by Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Abbie Cornish and Hugo Weaving and opens in Cineplex theatres September 24.
