With its focus on mental illness and dance competitions, David O. Russell’s new feature Silver Linings Playbook may seem like a change of pace from his last film, the heavy-hitting boxing movie The Fighter, but just like his 2010 film, SLP is steadily gaining Oscar buzz. The family-focused drama won the coveted People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival,
a title that has gone on to earn thirty-four People’s Choice Award
winners one hundred and five Oscar nominations including ten for Best
Picture, including eventual winner American Beauty, Slumdog Millionaire and The King’s Speech. Those are some pretty impressive odds behind Silver Linings Playbook, and the film’s stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro who will be the ones to watch come awards season.
Three Kings director Russell has had his fair share of working with big stars and top name talent including George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Amy Adams and directed Christian Bale and Melissa Leo to their acting Oscars for The Fighter. Mark Wahlberg
certainly thinks Russell knows what he’s doing behind the camera: the
pair has worked together on three of the director’s six feature films.
Somewhat notoriously difficult to work with, there’s no denying Russell
has a keen eye for directing talent.
