It's hard to believe it's been 13 years since venerable Scottish treasure Ewan McGregor buzzed his hair and grew that weird, wiry rat tail to play a young Obi-Wan Kenobe, wielded lightsabers with present-day action hero Liam Neeson and Darth Maul and Oscar winner Natalie Portman got all dolled up as Queen Amidala for George Lucas' prequel Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
This first look at the humble beginnings of Anakin Skywalker was, of course, followed by Episode II - Attack of the Clones in 2002 and Episode III - Revenge of the Sith in 2005, where homeboy Hayden Christensen played a big part in the intergalactic fable.
Now, with an added layer of movie magic, Phantom Menace will be hitting a theatre near you in 3D but it's not the only re-release catering to nostalgic viewers, and those too young or disinterested to catch it the first time around.
Find out what other 3D re-releases you can expect in 2012.
James Cameron's celebrated love story about the tragic sinking of the Titanic made mega stars out of its baby-faced leads Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and picked up a staggering 11 Oscars for its troubles. Anyone possessing adolescent hormones and enough cash to buy a movie ticket in the '90s saw this movie - maybe even more than once - and it remains a go-to sweeping romance made all the more heartbreaking because of the impending tragedy we're all bracing ourselves for. It's hard to imagine how Cameron's grandiose tale could get any bigger but you can find out how it plays with an added dimension come April 6.
Hitting that sweet spot between a child-like yearning for adventure and an adult's appreciation of gifted comics Ellen Degeneres and Albert Brooks, Finding Nemo is a Disney-Pixar gem and finds itself in the position of rightfully warranting a 3D re-release. Given that most of the action takes place in the visually-rich medium of water and the creatures who live within its brilliant, terrifying and wondrous barriers are brought to life in astounding colours, following blue tang Dory and clownfish Marvin as they search for his young son Nemo deserves to be an immersive experience. You'll have to wait until September 14 but I'm sure many families, teens and adults will be more than eager to take the plunge.
Yup, it's a tale as old as time but guess who got a modern-day facelift..of sorts. Not Beast and not Belle but the beloved Disney film itself, shown in 3D when it was re-released on January 13. And audiences proved they still had plenty of love for Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Lefou and Stove, and maybe even a soft spot for the arrogant and deluded Gaston when they took to the theatre last month. You can rekindle your love of the gentle giant, his unlikely paramour, the talking appliances and dinnerware, and maybe even Celine Dion, with this 3D version, the first to kick off the trend in 2012.
Should these three offerings not tickle your fancy, Hollywood shows no signs of abandoning the 3D re-release with Little Mermaid and Monsters Inc. coming at you in 2013.
