George Clooney and Jason Reitmen on set

By all accounts, Jason Reitman is having a good year. His third film, Up in the Air, has garnered the 32-year-old writer-director a serious slew of accolades, from a record six Golden Globe nominations to awards from the National Board of Review and top honours from film critics in cities ranging from New York to Toronto. The Canadian-born filmmaker was recently in town to take part in the Olympic torch run with his dad, uber-famous director-producer Ivan Reitman, and Cineplex spoke to him about the journey from Juno to George Clooney and, oh yeah, all that Oscar buzz.

Do you have a sense of how big this film is and how much it’s raised your profile or are you outside of all the hype?

All I know right now is that it’s becoming easier and easier to make my films and with each film it’s become easier to get a greenlight to make the kind of personal films I want to make and that’s really all I’m after in my career, so it feels like I’m going in the right direction.

The movie is based on Walter Kirn’s book but a lot of the screenplay is original material that you wrote. Would it feel even sweeter to pick up a screenplay Golden Globe since you were so intimately involved in the writing?

Any recognition is great and certainly getting all those nominations...[but] probably the sweetest win is knowing that the night of the Golden Globes, everyone’s putting on the tux – the whole family’s going down, my actresses, my actor, my dad and I, my co-producers, it’s going to be one big table.

And you also get to share the success of Up in the Air with your dad, who’s one of the producers. What’s it been like, sharing this journey with him?

You know, it’s been a life’s dream come true. My father is my hero, he’s taught me so much about storytelling and about being a man in general, so after establishing myself as a director and kind of creating my own name with my first two films, nothing made me more proud than to make a movie with my father and share a screen credit with him and work with him officially for the first time. He’s been reviewing my work my whole life but this is the first time we’ve been able to go on record with it.

Moving from a movie like Juno, where arguably the biggest star was Jason Bateman or Jennifer Garner, and then making a movie with George Clooney, did you feel any added pressure having his name attached?

No, I mean, how would that add pressure for me? He’s a guy that only makes me look better. Honestly, it just makes things easier, it makes the greenlight easier, it makes shooting everywhere easier. He’s also a lovely guy so he’s just wonderful to make a movie with and certainly in releasing this film, it raised the level of awareness tenfold.

What do you think it is about this movie that’s resonating with people?

This is a movie that really speaks to the year 2009. Hopefully in 10 years, people will look back on this year and they’ll say that this is the exemplary film of this year, of 2009, that it’s about a guy, not only who fires people for a living in an economy like we’re having, but also a man connecting to the people around him and I can’t help but feel like at this moment in our human history, we’re oddly more disconnected than we’ve ever been, even though we have the technology that we have and travel is at the state that it is. We are disconnected and we need to reconnect…that’s what this movie is all about.

Case in point, you're talking to me from your cell phone in a car, on the way to the airport.

Exactly. Who knows, maybe I'll go on Twitter after and really bring this full circle.


So, what’s next for you?

I’m adapting a book by Joyce Maynard called Labor Day and as soon as I stop doing these interviews, I’m going to start writing.

When are they going to stop, though, because you know what’s next is the Oscars, right?

[Laughs] Well, next for me is the last night of Hanukkah. Honestly, the buzz isn’t on my mind. When I brought it to TIFF, and that was right after I finished the film, all I was thinking about was, how will my audience embrace this film. Because I think of the people that come to the Toronto Film Festival as my core audience, the people I make my movies for and fortunately that screening went over really well.

Up in the Air is playing in select Cineplex theatres now and opens wide December 23.
