Hard to believe it’s been fifty years since we first learned that a former nun could belt out a tune.
March 2 marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, the timeless musical starring Julie Andrews as a woman who leaves a convent to become the governess of a widowed Naval officer’s brood of children.
Whiskers on kittens and blue satin sashes are still a few of our favourite things, as are the now-iconic songs from the film, including “Maria,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-re-mi,” and “Edelweiss,” just to name a few. It’s not called The Sound of Music for nothing.
The film would go on to win several top awards at the Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and of course, Best Musical Score. As The Sound of Music celebrates its 50th anniversary and sings its way into select theatres this week and we’re celebrating by looking back at some of film’s memorable musicals and musical numbers in movies for this week’s movie quiz.
From animated musicals to stories that have made it from the Broadway stage to the screen (and vice versa) the musicals and song and dance numbers of the films in our quiz never fail to get our toes tapping as we try not to sing aloud. And we’re not talking strictly musicals- we’ve got a soft spot for films that surprise us by throwing a great dance sequence or musical number in an otherwise non-musical movie. Who doesn’t love to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt dancing with an animated bluebird to Hall & Oates in (500) Days of Summer, right?
Put on your dancing shoes and start humming along to our musical quiz below!
