There was no Banksy in a monkey mask, not much in the way of steals besides Tom Hooper snatching Best Director from David Fincher’s skilled hands and eliciting a collective “No way!” from the internet, and Anne Hathaway, all Disney princess eyes and in full desperate-for-our-approval showstopping mode, stole the night from her dull, aloof co-host James Franco, from whom the media and public at large expected, well, something.

RDJ and Sherlock Holmes buddy/BFF Jude Law had the best chemistry, Celine Dion went for tears with her drippy In Memoriam performance and everyone acted like Natalie Portman was the first woman to get pregnant.

A sporadically entertaining show that didn't feel all that much cooler, despite the youthful emcees and numerous mentions of Twitter, the 2011 Oscars still gave us some things to talk about.

No song and dance from Franco, despite promises otherwise, though he did dress in a Marilyn Monroe inspired drag get-up while Hathaway sang to the back row, dressed down in a tux. The opening montage found our hosts edited into the 10 Best Picture nominated films - it's been done but was cute and mildly entertaining - and then were thrown into the Delorean for some reason. I get that Back to the Future recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of its release, but how tacked on did that feel?

Melissa Leo’s FBOMB. The unscripted moment we were all hoping for happened early on while she was accepting her golden statue for Best Supporting Actress thanks to her work in The Fighter and it’s telling that something like salty language made for smiles and cheers galore. At least it took some attention away from her dress. (BURN!)

Typically prickly Christian Bale usually gives good speech, mostly because he doesn’t seem to give a lick and has something of a temper, but at the podium for his deserving Best Supporting Actor Oscar for The Fighter, he was all kinds of neutered and respectable but the jury’s still out on whether or not he got choked up talking about his wife or momentarily forgot her name. I’m secretly hoping for the latter.

David Seidler, who won Best Original Screenplay for penning The King’s Speech opened his thank you speech thusly: “My father always said I’d be a late bloomer.” Cue awws.

Kirk Douglas. I’m going to tread carefully lest I offend anyone, but there’s respecting your elders and then there’s being overly PC and patronizing. Sure, he had some decent quips but just like the faux-tarting up of Betty White, who’s a decade his junior, old people plus sexual innuendo doesn’t equal laughs so much as tight smiles and discomfort. Plus, his bit went on forever.

RDJ and Jude Law. Hands down this adorable duo had the easiest, most believable chemistry of the night, with Law bravely bringing up Downey Jr.’s sketchy past with candour and then allowing RDJ to volley back a well-worded quip. A soured RDJ telling the audience that Law no longer had a ride to the afterparty was a nice touch and the whole bit proved to be a rather winning ad for Sherlock Holmes 2.

Goofy, gleeful, hirsute and unknown actor-director Luke Matheny didn’t waste any time making with the memorable Oscar moment, opening his acceptance speech for God of Love (Short Film, Live Action) by saying aloud what we were all thinking: “I should have gotten a haircut.”

The usually charming and delightfully offbeat James Franco spent his time onstage looking bored, or according to the Twittersphere was perhaps Banksy-ed (basically, high) or auditioning for Pineapple Express 2. He seemed more interested in updating his own Twitter account and gave us not even a glimpse of the performance artist we all want him to be. But props for his "Congratulations, nerds" semi-dis after a montage of the technical awards recipients showed us a whole lot of (likely) D&D enthusiasts.

“Where was I?” Eight-time host Billy Crystal showed the kids how it’s done by acting as if he was just taking a bathroom break and launched into a loving, earnest nod to super-host Bob Hope who appeared via hologram in a manner that was, surprisingly, not creepy. That guy’s a class act.

Fawning over Natalie Portman’s pregnancy. Let's be honest. People have babies ALL THE TIME: it’s called the proliferation of the human race. Just because she’s cute doesn’t make it any more special. Wouldn’t it be revolutionary if someone actually asked about her work despite the baby bump? A girl can dream, can't she.

And while we’re talking candidly, admiring Sandra Bullock for being brave, which means showing up and saying some words written by someone else from a teleprompter even though she’s been through a DIVORCE (GASP), is shameful. Being nominated is admirable, showing up is your job.

And Grandma Franco proved brevity is the soul of wit by killing it in two words: Marky Mark. And Wahlberg seemed to be in on the joke, for once, miming pulling up his shirt in a nod to his ab-happy Calvin Klein days.
