Though he was there to promote the new Marc Webb-helmed Spider-man reboot, Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, who plays Dr. Curt Connors in the flick, briefly stole the Comic-Con spotlight when he got into a mix-up with security before the panel.
According to The Wrap, Ifans was not happy when a member of his crew encountered some resistance while trying to enter the backstage bowels of the den of geek, Hall H and, as tends to happen when tempers flare, words were exchanged and Ifans ended up pushing a security guard so his friend/posse member could get in.
He still participated in the panel, which was a big hit incidentally, and was issued a citizen's arrest afterwards, for being "aggressive and belligerent" according to Lt. Andra Brown, who claimed "he was…berating everyone from the security staff to the United States of America."
Not a good idea since a certain red, white and blue crime-fighter was also making a splash in San Diego this past weekend.
Sony spokesman Steve Elzer issued a statement regarding the dust-up saying Ifans "was detained by Comic-Con security after a brief incident backstage prior to and immediately following The Amazing Spider-Man panel. Police were notified and a citation was issued to Mr. Ifans who deeply regrets this incident."
He may have only walked away with a slap on the wrist, but set against the backdrop of grown men and women decked out in fantastical costumes, foaming at the idea of watching movie footage before anyone else and camping out for Twilight cast glimpses, the Ifans incident passes for downright controversial.
