For the last 12 years, director Robert Zemeckis has favoured testing the limits of motion capture and brought audiences books and fairy tales come to (truer-than) real life in movies like The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol but he ditches the pretty veneer of hyper-reality for this month's Flight, a gritty human drama about a troubled pilot whose heroic deed brings his darkest secrets into the open as those around him demand answers.

Denzel Washington stars as pilot Whip Whitaker, a charismatic puffed shirt with a drinking problem whose fast thinking saves lives but who soon stars to drown in the aftermath of his actions. Zemeckis, the man who helmed Back to the Future I through III, Forrest Gump and Cast Away among others, brings his technologically-proficient touch to his return to live-action and creates a tale of redemption and hope amid the ruins, coaching an Oscar-worthy performance from an excellent Washington.

We got the chance to sit down with Zemeckis to talk about his casting choices, getting back to live-action and that terrifying crash scene.
