She's been acting for four decades plus, has two Oscars on her mantle and delivered one of the most iconic acceptance speeches to boot, and yet Sally Field said that her strategy when it came to taking on the role of former first lady Mary Todd Lincoln was not to think about the inherent responsibility of bringing a larger-than-life historical figure to audiences in Steven Spielberg's inventive biopic Lincoln.

And yet to watch her performance, necessarily more pained and overt than Daniel Day-Lewis' low-key and composed Lincoln, it's hard to believe that thinking wasn't the first order of business, especially with the reams of dialogue Tony Kushner's clever script contained.

Speaking with Cineplex while in Toronto recently, Field said that without much rehearsal time, her and Day-Lewis were able to find a way to play husband and wife because they both stayed in character the entire time, a method more readily associated with her co-star but one she said she's always used.
