It's finally here. Just days after the teaser poster for Star Trek Into Darkness hit online, Paramount has released the first official sneak peek at J.J. Abrams' eagerly anticipated sequel.

The trailer may seem woefully short to some - run time comes in at just over a minute - but it's impressively jam-packed with enough teases and fan fodder to conceivably keep audiences theorizing until the film's release on May 17. Luckily they won't have to wait that long. This is just what the studio is referring to as the "announcement" trailer. Come December 17, there will be an even longer sneak peek into the summer movie.

But does it answer the big question? THE big question? You know the one. Who is the villain of the piece? Just who will Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves battling on the big screen this time? Sort of. Okay...not concretely. Though there's an extra few seconds in the Japanese version of the trailer that drops a pretty unmistakable hint. But don't let us spoil any of it for you. Watch the trailer to find out for yourself or head to Apple to check out the slightly lengthier version from Japan:

So there you have it. Featured as the lone figure in the teaser poster and now quite prominently in this premiere sneak peek (including one hell of a voice-over), we can honestly say Benedict Cumberbatch's velvet-throated villain - interestingly described in the new synopsis as a one man weapon of mass destruction - is the character that we're most looking forward to seeing (and hearing) on the big screen in 2013. If someone could also look into having Cumberbatch narrate or voice-over ALL trailers for 2013, we'd be most grateful.

Star Trek Into Darkness, which also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, and Alice Eve, is set to open in theatres on May 17. Be sure to check out the first nine minutes of the film, which will debut in front of The Hobbit at select IMAX theaters starting December 13, along with the full teaser trailer debuting in-theatre in front of The Hobbit over that weekend.
