And just like that, the mood is set. Columbia Pictures released the first official image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man today and with a brooding demeanour, scratched up face and tattered Spidey suit, it seems (500) Days of Summer's Marc Webb has a darker tale he'll be telling as director of the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man reboot.
While jaws were set frantically wagging when the reedy British 28-year-old was cast as the web-slinging crime-fighter, he proved his chops as wronged Facebook co-founder in David Fincher's The Social Network and gave good melancholy in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go opposite heavyweights Keira Knightely and Carey Mulligan and now looks to have superhero-esque biceps in this first look photo.
With a script by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Losers) and co-stars in the form of Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Denis Leary, the re-imagining of the story of a young Peter Parker is still shrouded in mystery when it comes to plot details but Garfield recently told Details that he's looking forward to putting his own spin on the well-loved character and face expectations head-on.
The film is set to come to a theatre near you, in 3D, July 3, 2012.
