Following in the not-inconsiderably large footsteps of Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight trilogy, J.J. Abrams will debut the first nine minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness in roughly 500 IMAX theatres starting December 14. The highly anticipated footage will play in front of the newly released The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Nolan started the end-of-year, sneak peek trend when he showed the opening sequences of both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises on IMAX screens the December before their releases. The first film previewed in front of I Am Legend and the last, this past December, in front of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Like all four of those films, Abrams shot parts of his upcoming sequel using IMAX-format cameras and, unlike the previous previews, plans to show his extended preview in IMAX 3-D. A first for movie audiences.
Star Trek Into Darkness, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Benedict Cumberbatch, blasts into theatres on May 17, 2013. Let the buzz begin...
