The French film that bravely chose silence seems to be following in the footsteps of late bloomer The King's Speech, last year's unassuming award-winning biopic that opened with a whisper and went on to gather steam as word-of-mouth and strong reviews propelled it into the minds and hearts of audiences.

The Artist added to its trophy haul by winning the top prize at the Producers Guild Awards ceremony this weekend, positioning itself as a the front-runner for this year's Oscars. And just in time too, since the nominations are being announced Tuesday morning.

The PGA and the Academy have awarded the same film with best picture honours for the past four years, so the odds are certainly stacked in the favour of the black-and-white film walking away a big winner come February 26.

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures was accepted by writer Claude Barri and producer Thomas Langmann, who said of the film's stellar reception, "When [director] Michel [Hazanavicius] and I dreamed of making The Artist, we dreamed of writing a love letter to American cinema. We just didn't know that we would get a taste of the American dream." Cue awwws.

Other movers-and-shakers honoured by the PGA include Steven Spielberg, who picked up the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for his rollicking The Adventures of Tintin as well as the David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures, a tribute prize recognizing his impressive work as a storyteller. When it came to docs, actor Michael Rapaport, and fellow producers Debra Koffler, Frank Mele and Edward Parks, were delighted by the prize their Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest earned. The pic looked at the influential hip-hop collective's long-running career in music and pop culture and won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures

Angelina Jolie was also in attendance as her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey scored the Stanley Kramer Award, and comic book legend Stan Lee was introduced by Tobey Maguire before he took to the stage to accept his Vanguard Award.

George Clooney presented the Milestone Award to CBS' head honcho Les Moonves, who thanked the crowd and then quipped: [T]there is no one in the world I would change places with, except this guy," pointing, of course, to Gorgeous George.

The PGA also gave kudos to television producers from "Modern Family," Downton Abbey", "Boardwalk Empire," "The Colbert Report," "The Amazing Race" and more.
