The fans have gone home, the costumes have been put away, and the stars and celebs have all returned to the sets from whence they came. That's right, another year of Comic-Con has come and gone. The annual celebration of the popular arts brought with it the usual hype, headlines and hordes of humanity but it also brought with it something new: me! I got to experience the Con in person for the very first time. I reveled in the chaos and craziness as I unleashed my inner-geek and let it loose on a 4-day blitz of everything movie, television and fan-related it could find! By the end of the third day, I was running on pure adrenaline, and by the 4th day I could barely stand-up due to line-up fatigue but somehow I made it through and made my way back home in one piece. If I were to list everything that struck me as memorable, we'd be here all night so I've narrowed it down to what I consider to be the very best of the best for Comic-Con 2010. Take a look!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go have a wee nap coma.

BEST FAN MOMENT:

During the audience Q&A portion of the Warner Brothers' Green Lantern panel, a very young fan made his way up to a microphone to ask star Ryan Reynolds what it felt like to say the famous Green Lantern oath. Without any hesitation (and with no script to reference), the actor launched into the speech with a seriousness and gravity that all fans could appreciate:

In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might
Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!

The assembled masses in Hall H erupted into delighted applause while the young boy beamed. It was the memory of a lifetime for a pint-sized fan and a moment that few lucky enough to be there will soon forget.

BIGGEST SURPRISE:

It would be a huge understatement to simply say that Comic-Con and Star Wars have a connection. It's safe to say that the annual convention wouldn't exist in its present form if not for the devoted fan-base that really started it all. So it is no surprise to see Mark Hamill or other cast members in the Exhibit Hall for one reason or another each year but Han Solo himself had never made an appearance...until now. Harrison Ford made a unscheduled stop in Hall H to talk about his new film, Cowboys & Aliens, joining a panel that included co-stars Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and director Jon Favreau.

Two security guards playfully brought him out in handcuffs as the 6,000 plus crowd in  attendance greeted him with a sustained standing ovation. Sometimes it's worth the wait.

BEST USE OF COSTUMES:

On behalf of those of us lined up bright and early on Thursday to ensure prime seats for the first full day of events, I'd like to thank both Will Ferrell and Michael Cera. Both actors went all out to play to and entertain the Comic-Con crowds, with Ferrell completely decked out as his Megamind character, blue face paint and all, and Cera as a fully-costumed Captain America! Their panels (for Megamind and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and respectively) book-ended the scheduled events and there was really no better way to kick-off and close opening day. Check out highlights from the Megamind panel here!

BEST "IT LIVED UP TO THE HYPE" MOMENT:

Marvel kept this cast reveal tightly under wraps so naturally, being Hollywood, everyone saw it coming. From the first appearances of Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. at the tail-end of the Marvel Studios panel, to the new cast announcements of Mark Ruffalo (as The Hulk) and Jeremy Renner (as Hawkeye), right down to the confirmation of Joss Whedon as the director, The Avengers reveal played out exactly as insiders said it would. The surprise that no one saw coming? Was that, predictability aside, it was every bit as exciting as Marvel execs wanted it to be. But with that much star power and with that many fans in the crowd, it couldn't really have turned out any other way, could it? Movie lovers, meet the real A-Team.

Read more about the Marvel announcement here.

Community
(NBC)
BEST USE OF MUSIC:

As you know if you've been following our Comic-Con coverage, I spent the majority of my time hitting up the big movie panels in Hall H. The one exception was when I high-tailed it  to the Hilton to check out the panel devoted to the cast and creative team behind NBC's freshman hit, "Community". Boy, am I glad I did. It was an hour of pure, unadulterated hilarity as the stars, writers and producers went all out with their first real interaction with fans. It also happened to feature one of my fave moments from the whole 4-day Con. Donald Glover and Danny Pudi, who portray bromantic buddies Troy and Abed on the Thursday night show, busted into an impromptu rendition of their characters' Spanish rap, "Donde Esta La Biblioteca." The fans went crazy and we all fell just a little more in love with this show, these characters and the actors behind it all. Go Human Beings!

Guillermo del Toro
BEST USE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE:

Most of you know Guillermo Del Toro as the creative mind behind Pan's Labyrinth and other delightfully scary film and lit fare. What you probably don't know is that in addition to being passionate about film, storytelling, and the arts, the writer/director/producer/artist swears like the saltiest of sailors. At the panel for his new film Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, Del Toro warned parents that they might want to take their children out of the room. Not because the footage they were about to show was too scary (although it was TERRIFYING) but because his creativity also lends itself to offensive language. What followed was a raucous, honest, refreshing hour with one of the most talented men in the business that felt as intimate as sitting with your best friend in a bar. Del Toro just shot straight to the top of my "celeb dinner guest list."

Tron Legacy
BEST AUDIENCE INTERACTION:

I included this in my Best of Comic-Con Day 1 post, but it's honestly too good to not mention in the final tally. While each panel in Hall H gave fans a chance to interact with the cast and crew on stage via in depth Q&A sessions, Tron: Legacy director Joe Kosinski took audience participation to a whole new and technical level by making the crowd an actual part of the finished film. He explained that he wanted to find a way to honour Tron's well-documented relationship with Comic-Con by recording cheers and reactions for use in the stadium/game scenes in the film. So, with the help of a giant instruction screen, the assembled 6000 fans took the time to record chants ("De-REZ!"), cheers and stomps that will become a part of Tron and film history when the film in released in December.

Edgar Wright
(Photo by Jerod Harris/Getty Images for MySpace)
BEST "THIS IS WHAT COMIC-CON IS ALL ABOUT" MOMENT:

The panel for Universal's Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World closed out the first day in incomparable style. After bringing up almost the entire cast, showcasing brand new footage and then moderating the audience Q&A, the film's director Edgar Wright announced to the Hall H crowd that he would be screening the film at a downtown theatre. The best part? If you'd been given a "1 Up" Pilgrim button before the panel, that was your free pass to go. Amid the excited din, he instructed everyone to follow him to the theatre. And so we went, like mice after the Pied Piper, marching and rushing through to the streets of San Diego. The surprises didn't stop there; after everyone arrived, Wright announced that the band Metric (who appear in the film) would perform a special set after the credits rolled. Big surprises, fans and film. If that doesn't sum up what makes Comic-Con so amazing, I don't know what does.

Joss Whedon
COMIC-CON 2010 MVP:

Okay, it's not a "best of" but it had to be acknowledged. Between his three at-capacity panels, not one, but two screenings of his work (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and the Buffy musical episode 'Once More, With Feeling'), and countless fan gatherings devoted to the man himself and his creations, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call Comic-Con 2010 the Year of the Whedon. Okay, that sounds a little like he attacked Comic-Con (remember the Summer of the Shark?) so let's just say it was Joss Whedon's year to shine. With the announcement that he is officially helming Marvel's highly anticipated Avengers film, you can bet this won't be the last time he whips the Comic-Con crowd into a frenzy. See you in 2011, Joss!
