While the usual suspects were well represented in this morning's Oscar nomination announcement, the Academy threw some curve balls by including less visible contenders like Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, The Tree of Life, Bridesmaids and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, shutting out Steven Spielberg's animated shoe-in The Adventures of Tintin and swapping Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk about Kevin) for Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) in the Best Actress category.

Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (your big-screen Katniss Everdeen) was awake and looking statuesque as ever beside Tom Sherak, Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences president, who announced the nominations in the big 10 categories amid sporadic cheers and hollers, notably after Max von Sydow's name was mentioned in the Best Supporting Actor field for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, director Terrence Malick got a deserved nod for The Tree of Life and Gary Oldman finally got his first Oscar nomination EVER (!) for playing George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

In the Foreign Language Film category, Canada has a chance to pick up Oscar gold with Philippe Falardeu's Monsieur Lazhar among the five nominees. The drama, directed and written by Falardeau from a play by Evelyn de la Cheneliere, follows an Algerian immigrant (Mohamed Fellag) at risk of being deported who is hired to replace an elementary school teacher whose tragic death haunts the students.

And Woody Allen continues to enjoy a banner year with critical lauds and awards nominations for his whimsical and devilishly clever Midnight in Paris scoring Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Director nods for the prolific director.

BBFs and writing partners Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo have reason to party hard since their R-rated comedy Bridesmaids is surely the only nominee among the other Best Original Screenplay contenders to feature acrobatic sex with Jon Hamm, a violently ill bridal party and topless driving. Melissa McCarthy, herself responsible for making some of those scenes laugh-till-you-cry hysterical, earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her unhinged turn in the Judd Apatow-produced laffer.

The 84th annual Academy Awards will be presented on February 26 and hosted by the one and only Billy Crystal. Go here for all the latest awards news, interviews, photos and more.
