It's odd to think that there is a whole generation of movie fans who know Mel Gibson more for his off-screen antics rather than his on-screen powerhouse performances. Prior to his 2005 arrest (and subsequent controversial remarks) and his very public 2009 divorce, the American-born, Aussie-raised superstar made headlines for his box office pull and critically-acclaimed roles, not for his personal troubles. After 2002's Signs, the actor transitioned to a seemingly permanent role behind the camera, directing the controversial epics The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. But in this week's gritty thriller Edge of Darkness, Gibson is stepping out from behind the camera for the first time in over seven years to take on a leading role.
Given this return to acting, we take a look at the roles we consider to be his very best. Did your favourites make the list?
