It's Super Bowl Sunday, where the New England Patriots will take on the New York Giants and one team will win the big game and take over Monday's headlines, after which the general population will go back to not caring all that much about football.
It's also an occasion for Madonna to strut her inexplicably ageless stuff as our half-time entertainment maker. So while you figure out what kind of sauce to serve with your wings and what movie trailers and million-dollar commercials you're most excited to watch, we're getting you ready for Super Bowl XLVI with our Top 10 Football Movies.
Get the list after the jump!
10. Little Giants - As a Patriots fan it was tough to include a movie with Giants in the title but this movie is too much fun to pass up since its football with little kids. Sure it's the age old story of a team of lesser skilled players taking on a powerhouse team of stars but when you have Rick Moranis coaching the misfits and Ed O'Neil coaching the star kids, you can't lose.
9. Jerry Maguire – This movie is admittedly about more than just football - relationships, love and life - and won Cuba Gooding Jr. a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing the role of the talented but mercurial wide receiver Rod Tidwell. Bonus: tons of NFL player cameos.
8. The Program - James Caan stars as the tough as nails coach of one of the top college football teams. He battles his own star players as often he does the other team.
7. Invincible - Mark Wahlberg stars as Vince Papale, a man who never gave up chasing his dream of playing in the NFL. Papale worked his way on to the Philadelphia Eagles as a 30-year-old rookie following a tryout with the team.
6. Friday Night Lights – The best-selling book then became a critically acclaimed movie, followed by a hit TV series. All three look at the pressures the players and coaches face at a high school in Odessa, Texas.
5. Varsity Blues - Another story about high school football in small town Texas though not as serious. James Van Der Beek is thrust into the starting role of quarterback following a brutal injury of his team's star player. He locks horns with his winning-obsessed coach (Jon Voigt) and the two clash over the way the players are treated. Scott Caan, Amy Smart and Paul Walker co-star.
4. Rudy - Like Vince Papale, Rudy Ruettiger never gave up. Rudy was told he was too small to play football but he wouldn't listen. He was told he would never play football at Notre Dame. He showed everyone they were wrong. Lord of the Rings' main man Sean Austin brings the fiery title character to life.
3. We Are Marshall - Based on a true story. This one tells the heartbreaking tale of the 1970 Marshall University football team that was tragically killed in a plane crash. Three players weren't on the plane and one tries to convince the school to restart the program. Matthew McConaughey takes the job as the new coach who will lead the new team of players and help a school and community heal.
2. Remember the Titans - Denzel Washington takes over as the coach of a high school football team that racially integrates players together for the first time. Washington must get his players to trust one another and work as a team, rather than fight each other.
1. Any Given Sunday - Director Oliver Stone brings together an all-star cast that features Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Al Pacino, LL Cool J, James Woods, Dennis Quaid and former NFL stars Lawrence Taylor and Jim Brown. Pacino stars as Coach Tony D'Amato who, in a season, battles his aging and injured quarterback (Quaid) and the hotshot who replaces him (Foxx), an entitled veteran (LL) and the owner who wants to move the team (Diaz).
