Admit it - there are few things hotter than a woman who knows how to stand up for herself, get the job done and isn't afraid to break a nail while doing it. The women listed here do one better and aren't afraid to crack a few skulls, becoming cinematic icons of strength, feminine chutzpah and proof that gender has nothing to do with the ability to kick ass.

From Linda Hamilton's beefed-up turn as the prophetic, driven Sarah Connor to Uma Thurman's tall drink of yellow-coloured vengeance in Kill Bill and Angelina Jolie's latest role as a CIA agent accused of defecting in Salt, a role, tellingly, meant as a vehicle for Tom Cruise, these women are tops when it comes to on-screen tenacity.

These first ladies of action movies show they can go toe-to-toe with the burliest, brawniest men and emerge sweat-soaked victors and we can hardly wait to celebrate their, ahem, bodies of work.
