Leave it to Seth Rogen to encourage his friend and fellow scribe Will Reiser to use writing as a method of therapy when he was diagnosed with cancer in his mid-20s. Rogen, who has put his money where his mouth is by fictionalizing portions of his own life in Superbad, and Reiser were both working on "Da Ali G Show" when Reiser found out about a tumour on his spine and dealt with it the way he and his friends dealt with everything: humour.
The result is the emotional and funny 50/50, directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Reiser's big-screen stand-in Adam, with Rogen mimicking his real-life role as the punchline-ready best friend. Pint-sized Anna Kendrick co-stars as Adam's newbie therapist, Angelica Houston as his frazzled, over-bearing mother and Bryce Dallas Howard continues her dark streak as Rachael, the selfish, unprepared girlfriend who quietly freaks out over Adam's diagnosis.
We sat down with the talented cast to find out how you make a comedy about cancer when the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
