Well Ricky might have been off his game, but the fashion on view at the 69th Annual Golden Globe awards didn't fail to wow us.

And with a mash-up of stars from the big and small screens, how could it?

As usual, it was the leading ladies that stole the show, parading around in a variety of gorgeous gowns. Those who gave us the most closet envy stepped out in colour (thank you, Julianna!), runway-worthy shapes (Tilda and Reese) and sparklers that set our heart a flutter (so jealous, Sofia). And, while we hate to neglect the men, the biggest news was that midnight blue is the new black when it comes to tuxedos – and the only thing George Clooney and Matt LeBlanc have in common. If only RGos had been there to shake things up, he no doubt would have made this list.

Here's who did rock the red carpet at the 2012 Golden Globes.

#10 EMMA STONE

Emma Stone, star of The Help, unleashed her dark and dramatic side, and won points for most daring accessory of the night. We thought her two-tone blood red Lanvin gown, complete with eagle-adorned belt, was a look that soared above the rest of the flock.

#9  REESE WITHERSPOON

She may be America's sweetheart, but presenter and former Golden Globe winner Reese Witherspoon proved she's got a spicy side too. Her shapely, scarlet Zac Posen gown and perfectly tousled tresses (a, um, noticeable challenge to several other stars at the show) was a red-hot combo that walked the line straight into best-dressed territory.

#8 MICHELLE WILLIAMS

Michelle Williams, who won best actress in a comedy or musical for My Week with Marilyn, may not have been channeling the bombshell style of Miss Monroe, but she was still a knockout. In a textured navy Jason Wu gown, she caught our eye with a striking, yet understated, look that still had star power.

#7 PAULA PATTON

Hello, sunshine! It wasn't hard to spot Paula Patton. Her canary yellow Monique Lhuillier gown was a bold choice and a beacon of colourful chic on the red carpet. Rainbow bright, done right.

#6 SOFIA VERGARA

Sofia Vergara may have been nominated for her comedic timing in "Modern Family", but she showed up looking seriously stunning. Her peacock-y blue Vera Wang gown accented her famous figure, and her enviable mountain of diamonds didn't overwhelm her.

#5 VIOLA DAVIS

Viola Davis, nominated for her role in The Help, lost out in her best actress category but gained best-dressed status - and a shout out from Meryl! Her Bordeaux coloured Pucci gown, complete with sexy thigh-high slit, made her the picture of a modern day goddess.

#4 CHARLIZE THERON

A fair-haired woman in a pale-coloured dress can be a tricky combo, but when you're Charlize Theron, and wearing Dior Couture, you get it right. Nominated for her role in Young Adult, Charlize was nothing short of drop dead gorgeous in her high-fashion frock.

#3 JULIANNA MAGULIES

Talk about purple reign! Julianna Margulies, nominated for best actress in a dramatic TV series, ruled the red carpet in a plum Naeem Khan backless dress, but it was her choice of outside the box jewels that put her look to the next level. Those oversize mint green drop earrings were totally refreshing.

#2 EVAN RACHEL WOOD

Many a star wore Gucci, but we really went gaga for this one on Evan Rachel Wood. The "Mildred Pierce" star, nominated for best supporting actress, let her sheer, sequined and feathered dress do the talking and pared back the jewels to absolute perfection.

#1 TILDA SWINTON

Tilda Swinton's look can be summed up in two words: Loved. It. Only a divine creature can pull off the avant-garde styling of Haider Ackermann, and Tilda, nominated for best actress in a drama for We Need To Talk About Kevin, can. The colour, shape and details (double cuffs? Hellz yeah!) were as beautifully unique as she is.
