From the hockey rink to a TV screen near you, Toronto native Noah Reid, who stars in TIFF 2010's opening film Score: A Hockey Musical, has nabbed the lead role in SyFy's upcoming 90-minute pilot "Three Inches," an action-adventure show with a side of superhero.
Reid stars as Walter Spackman, a daydreamer who gets struck by lightning and discovers he has a supernatural power that isn't all that super after all. He can move objects with his mind (yay!) but only by three inches (boo!).
In the grand tradition of the suddenly-superior, he's recruited by a secret group of similarly gifted individuals including Spike from "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (James Marsters) as the team lead, Stephanie Jacobsen of "Battlestar Galactic"a and Naoki Mori of "Torchwood," who possesses powers that while mildly helpful - the ability to replicate any sound, being able to alter people's emotions - wouldn't necessarily be classified as all that super. I mean, no one's flying or anything.
The young thesp will be working with the upper echelons of geekdom pedigree - see above - and is looking foward to playing a character who challenges the notion of being a hero.
"The script for 'Three Inches' is extremely tongue-in-cheek," said Reid via email statement. "I’m excited to have the opportunity to play a hero that is not your cliché protagonist. Walter is an underachiever, who is suddenly faced with a hilarious superpower. This will be a fun role to portray."
In Score, Reid plays a gifted teen named Farley, a home-schooled high schooler who wows on the ice and gets recruited to the big leagues, much to the chagrin of his protective parents (Olivia Newton-John, Marc Jordan) and has trouble dealing with the pressures of fame. Like the musical, "Three Inches" will be filmed in Toronto.
