Rock musician Dave Grohl set out to make a recording studio the subject of his first-ever film. He was intrigued not only by the studio but by a specific piece of recording equipment - a 1970s era sound board - that captured every note of music made there.

Geek city, right? It sounds like an idea any sane moviegoer would run from.

Instead, Sound City offers a colorful piece of music history, a candid examination of changes wrought by technology and a defiant statement about not surrendering the human element in creativity. Grohl's rookie film made it to the Sundance movie festival, is being released theatrically Friday in the U.S. and is accompanied by an album featuring artists he interviewed.

"It honestly was more like a keg party with a camera than making a Hollywood film," he said.

Grohl knew nothing about the Sound City studio in Van Nuys, Calif., when he and fellow Nirvana members Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic booked a session to make Nevermind in 1991. Their California record company wanted Nirvana nearby to keep an eye on them and time at Sound City was cheap.

Movie Social Scene

Social media has become an added medium of coverage to all news genres, including sports, politics and entertainment. We’re bringing you a social media round-up of interesting and entertaining items making film headlines in the social sphere.

The force seems to be strong with director J.J. Abrams. First he reboots Star Trek, and now, word on the space station is that he’s been chosen to do the same for the new Disney-owned Star Wars. Well, the social sphere has responded.

Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan and Source Code director Duncan Jones were just a few of the scattered industry tweets that popped up after the news broke yesterday. Both seemed to support it; Monaghan saying that Abrams will ”CRRRRRRUSH it” and Jones wishing the “Lost” director congratulations on the new venture.

Bryan Greenberg (“How to Make It in America”) was also online with some wit, using the comical hashtag #LiveLongBeWithYou (combining the Star Trek “Live Long And Prosper” and the Star Wars “May The Force Be With You” mottos).

Amanda SeyfriedIt took a French revolution to pull Amanda Seyfried away from her role as '70s porn star Linda Lovelace.

Seyfried delved deep into her character in the biopic Lovelace, which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival. The 27-year-old actress says she was only able to shed the dark role by playing Cosette in the Oscar-nominated Les Misérables.

"I had a hard time letting go of Linda at the end of the movie," she said. "I had a really intense time with (co-star) Peter Sarsgaard. I think we both had a hard time letting go because we went to these places.

"He played a man who consistently beat his wife. And I played a woman who was raped and abused, psychologically and physically. I was constantly taking my clothes off. I didn't have an issue with that. She had an issue with that. So it was a lot. And the only thing that helped was getting onto Les Mis."

Lovelace tells the story of the unlikely porn star and the abusive relationship she shared with her husband, Chuck Traynor.

Seyfried was grateful her musical part in Les Mis came just three weeks after Lovelace wrapped.  If not, she said she might have "carried Linda for a long time, and it could have been unhealthy," even though she knew from the start the role would be risky - and risque.

"It is risky and people did not stop reminding me of that. But I also really wanted a challenge. It appealed to me in that way," she said. "And this woman had a fascinating story. There are things that a lot of people don't know. People have an idea of her. It's very one-dimensional."

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tony DanzaJoseph Gordon-Levitt is attending his sixth Sundance Film Festival, this time as writer and star of his directorial debut and host of the festival's closing awards ceremony.

The 31-year-old premiered Don Jon's Addiction Friday at the independent-film showcase. He plays the title character, a man who prefers pornography to real sex, even though he brings home a different woman every weekend. Scarlett Johansson, Tony Danza and Julianne Moore also star.

"I wanted to tell a love story, and in my observations, what gets in the way of love often times is the way the people objectify each other," Gordon-Levitt said in an interview Saturday. "The story centers on a relationship between a boy and a girl, and the boy watches too much pornography, and the girl watches too many romantic Hollywood movies, and they're both sort of objectifying each other."

Keep reading to see what Gordon-Levitt had to say about his comedy and the community at Sundance.

It's that time of year again when a tiny ski-resort town becomes the place to be for anyone in show business - stars and directors, distribution executives, musicians, unknown filmmakers hoping that people might want to hear the stories they tell.

Opening Thursday, the Sundance Film Festival takes over Park City for a week and a half every January. Anything resembling a theater is booked with screenings. Directors and their casts trudge snowy streets to introduce films and do interviews. Bars and restaurants are stuffed with people talking deals, or just talking about something crazy or unexpected they just saw on screen.

"It's almost like Burning Man. Once a year, this tiny little town that then transforms itself into kind of a crazy film city for 10 days out of the year," said writer-director Lynn Shelton, a Sundance regular (Humpday, Your Sister's Sister) who returns this year with Touchy Feely, starring Rosemarie DeWitt as a massage therapist suddenly struck by an aversion to touching others. "It's crammed with people all there for one reason. Whatever relationship they have to the industry, they're all there for the love of films."

Disney Pixar is pushing all the right buttons for its Monsters University marketing campaign.

The latest move for the upcoming film prequel is a college recruitment spoof video, which parodies all those cheesy videos of the same nature. And yes, it includes the awkward student testimonials. The spot ran during this week’s Rose Bowl broadcast.

These movies may be screening out of competition this coming January but even without a prize on the line, they are going to get their fair share of ink, or bandwidth, because of the level of expectation and buzz surrounding them.

From Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke's third Before movie, after Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), Before Midnight was basically shot under the radar in Greece and we're dying to know what happened after Jesse chose to miss his plane while Celine shimmied to jazz on the stereo. After, they don't make real-time, long-term romances like this all the time.

Check out the other just-announced premieres after the jump.

sundance 2013

Oscar-nominated and little-known names from the world of film and television will be hitting up Salt Lake City this year as their films screen, in and out of competition, as part of the 29th annual Sundance Film Festival.

The 2013 crop boasts "113 feature-length films representing 32 countries" including "51 first-time filmmakers," according to The Hollywood Reporter. In fact, the fest received almost 500 additional submissions this year, and among those selected are family drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints, starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, Kill Your Darlings, the Kerouac pic with Daniel Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg, actress Lake Bell's (No Strings Attached, "Children's Hospital) directorial debut In A World... and James Ponsoldt's follow-up to TIFF title Smashed, The Spectacular Now, with Shailene Woodley, Kyle Chandler and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Addressing the eclectic career paths of some of the festival's competitors, Trevor Groth, director of programming for the festival, told The Hollywood Reporter; "With some of the more interesting television that's happening now, you've got stars coming up in those ranks that aren't like studio-system blockbuster actors, but they're well-known actors who do really interesting work."
