Synopsis

In a career spanning nearly 50 years, director Robert Altman always refused to follow Hollywood conventions, imposing his own unique style which earned him the status of auteur. While his stubbornness antagonized some, it also granted him worldwide praise and introduced the expression "Altmanesque" as a cinematic style emphasizing dark humor, iconoclastic characters and chaotic choreography with overlapping dialog. Through rare interviews, clips from significant films, archival footage and comments from his collaborators and family members, this study of a passionate and sincere artist reveals the ups and downs of a life lived without compromise.
