If ever there was a week to be a Star Trek fan, this is it.
Following on the footsteps of last week's new poster and trailer, Paramount has released the first official image from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. It features Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock in a stare-off with Benedict Cumberbatch's villain as he stands in what looks to be the U.S.S. Enterprise's brig. Though the debate on the film's big bad continues to rage on, the fact Cumberbatch (and his spectacularly bulked-up body) is clad in stylish Starfleet togs would seem to lend considerable weight to the Gary Mitchell theory.
If it weren't for the fact that Paramount released this new still with the character's name attached. Are you ready for it? Cumberbatch is playing...John Harrison.
We don't know either.
Given J.J.'s propensity for secrecy, we're not sure if we should actually believe it or if it's just a very well-placed red herring. Also? I owe a lot of people a lot of money. I was so sure he was playing Gary Mitchell.
The scene shown here is not included in the recently released sneak peek or indeed in the upcoming 9 minutes of preview footage hitting IMAX digital screens with The Hobbit. There is a chance we may get more context in the upcoming extended trailer but, knowing J.J. and his propensity for secrecy, we're guessing not.
Check out the new photo below then let the "just who IS John Harrison?" debate rage on in the comments.
(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions.
Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX on May 17, 2013.
