Avengers: Infinity War destroys box office records in a snap

We knew it would be big. But even we couldn't have predicted the impact of this long-awaited movie!

After 10 years and 18 movies, the moment we've been waiting for is finally here, and it's even more epic than we thought it would be! Avengers: Infinity War arrived in theatres last week, and has decisively conquered the box office, shattering all previous records in its opening weekend.

The phenomenon is worldwide, but for reference, here's how Infinity War stacks up against the previous record-holders. The current ranking of the top 5 best opening weekends of all time in Canada are as follows:

  1. Avengers: Infinity War ($19.7MM)
  2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($18.6 MM)
  3. Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($17.0 MM)
  4. The Avengers ($15.6 MM)
  5. Avengers: Age of Ultron ($13.8 MM)

We spoke with Greg Mason, VP Marketing at Walt Disney Studios Canada, about the success of the film.

Did you expect the film to do this well? What do you attribute this phenomenal success to?

It’s higher than all of our expectations. It’s a testament to the filmmakers – to the Russo brothers and to Ryan Coogler and Taika Waititi – all their unique filmmaking styles have led up to this and broadened the fan base. Creating these individual stories then putting all these stories together into Infinity War resulted in something special.

What would you say to anyone on the fence about seeing the movie?

First of all, you don’t have to have seen the other movies to enjoy this. There are nods and treats in there for die-hard fans, but it does stand alone. That said, I can't think of any other film that is building up to something this big - it has to be seen on the big screen.

What's in store for other upcoming Marvel releases – Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel…?

Peyton Reed has a lot of fun surprises in store for Ant-Man, and without spoiling anything I think there will be a renewed and stronger interest in Captain Marvel! I can’t wait to see what Brie Larson does with the role.

Anything else you can share about upcoming movies…?

You’ll want to experience it yourself when the time comes! Part of the appeal of Infinity War is the different mashups of characters – pairing Spider-Man with Doctor Strange, Thor with the Guardians of the Galaxy – and there’s more to come.
