Beauty and the Beast: 10 actors who could be the Beast to Emma Watson’s Belle

Emma Watson, best known as Harry Potter’s bookish best friend Hermione Granger, announced that she will be Disney’s next princess – Belle! The Brown University graduate will be bringing her enviable combination of brains and beauty to Bill Condon’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been an announcement about who will play the Beast to Emma’s “Beauty.”

Who will be the Beast? We went through all the working heartthrobs of Hollywood, and picked our top candidates for the role.

Chris Pine

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. Chris starred in the adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods.
Age: 34 (10 years older than Emma)
Known For: Star Trek, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

We asked you on Facebook and Twitter who you’d like to be Disney’s next prince. Chris Pine was the popular choice. Two other Chrises – Hemsworth and Evans – were very close behind in the votes. Pine is currently in theatres playing a musically-inclined prince alongside Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, and Johnny Depp in the Oscar-nominated Into the Woods – though he is a little cheesy as Prince Charming. Wait... Hold up!

Oh, yes. We are completely behind this. Chris Pine would make a fantastic Gaston.

Daniel Radcliffe

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. Daniel starred in the Tony-nominated Broadway show, How to Suceed in Business.
Age: 25 (1 year older than Emma)
Known For: Harry Potter film franchise

J.K. Rowling said Harry Potter and Hermione Granger should have ended up together, so it’s almost fated that Dan and Emma should fall in love in another magical castle. Dan can sing and dance, and his chemistry with Emma is almost second nature at this point.

Robert Pattinson

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. He’s apparently on the Twilight soundtrack.
Age: 28 (4 years older than Emma)
Known For: Twilight film franchise, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Robert has the advantage over all of the other actors listed here, given that the tousle-haired actor starred in two of the Beauty and the Beast director’s films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2.

Eddie Redmayne

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. Eddie played Marius in the film adaptation of Les Miserables (to lukewarm critical response, however).
Age: 33 (9 years older than Emma)
Known For: The Theory of Everything, Les Miserables

With his Oscar hopes at their peak, The Theory of Everything’s Eddie is a hot commodity in Hollywood right now, and it would make sense for Condon to pick an actor with musical experience since Emma has none.

Sam Claflin

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. He sings in “The Pillars of Earth.”
Age: 28 (4 years older than Emma)
Known For: The Hunger Games

We’ve seen the Hunger Games actor a little scruffier in movies like Snow White and the Huntsman (where he also played a prince), but the British Actor has recently started playing villain roles in movies like Catching Fire and The Riot Club. You know what? Move over, Chris Pine. I think we have an even better pick for Gaston. Just imagine District 4’s high-status man candy singing this beauty:

Chadwick Boseman

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. Chadwick played funk legend James Brown in 2014’s Get On Up to great critical acclaim though most of the soundtrack is actually James Brown.
Age: 38 (14 years older than Emma)
Known For: 42, Get on Up, our future Black Panther in the Avengers

The age difference is a little stark here, but Chadwick still looks younger than half the actors on this list. It’d be great to have some diversity in the cast of Beauty and the Beast, and we already know Chadwick is incredible at becoming any character – even a giant… wolf..? Wait, what kind of creature is the Beast supposed to be?

Nicholas Hoult

Beauty and the Beast, photo Can he sing? Infamously no.
Age: 25 (1 year older than Emma)
Known For: X-Men, About a Boy

Though Nicholas has gone mainstream with the X-Men franchise, the former child star is still probably best known for his terrible, terrible singing in About a Boy. Maybe not the best pick for a musical? Oh, and he already plays “Beast” in X-Men.

Theo James

Beauty and the Beast, photo Can he sing? Yes, according to this YouTube video.
Age: 30 (6 years older than Emma)
Known For: Divergent, “Downton Abbey”

Theo wouldn’t have to change very much if he were to be cast as Beauty and the Beast’s titular male role. His brooding hero, Four, in the Divergent movies practically has the same off-putting, distant, slightly angry demeanor as the Beast.

Darren Criss

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes. Darren has starred in the television show “Glee” since 2009.
Age: 27 (3 years older than Emma)
Known For: “Glee”

The squeaky clean “Glee” regular could potentially break free of McKinley High’s New Directions with his casting in Beauty and the Beast. Unfortunately, he has the least amount of film experience out of the men on this list, with only one film credit to his name.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Beauty and the Beast, photoCan he sing? Yes, and he can also fake it pretty well.
Age: 33 (9 years older than Emma)
Known For: “3rd Rock from the Sun”, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception

I shouldn’t have to explain why JGL should sing and dance in a Disney movie. Let’s just watch this scene from (500) Days of Summer:

It even has cartoon birds. Disney prince, indeed!
