Celebrate the Lunar New Year with The Monkey King 3, Monster Hunt 2, and more International Cinema titles this weekend!

Every week, select Cineplex theatres feature some of the most popular and exciting films from all around the world, from countries like China, India, Korea, The Philippines and more. If you want to try something different at the movies, or simply celebrate your own or a new culture on the big screen, we’re highlighting the International Cinema titles out this weekend that you’ll surely enjoy!

This Friday is the Lunar New Year, and we have three titles that are being released to coincide with this holiday: Detective Chinatown 2, Monster Hunt 2 and The Monkey King 3! Find out all about these films and more international releases this weekend below!

Detective Chinatown 2 (Mandarin w/Chinese & English subtitles)

Here we follow Qin, who travels to New York City for what he thinks is a wedding, until he finds out it's actually a World Detective Contest with a big cash prize. In order to win, Qin must find the missing grandson of Uncle Qi, the Chinatown godfather. He soon finds out that the missing person has been murdered, and now the case involves solving the crime. Qin and his friend Tang work together as the "Detective Chinatown Duo" to solve the case.

Monster Hunt 2 
(Mandarin w/ Chinese & English subtitles)

The story continues with Wuba after he parts way with his human parents for his own journey. Peace has not been restored in the monster world after the death of the evil monster king, as a sinister lord has ascended and seized the throne. A heavy bounty is placed on Wuba dead or alive, forcing him to go into hiding again. He encounters an ill-famed gambler Tu who's deep in debt and seemingly up to no good. Together, they form a reluctant alliance in order to escape from their predicament.

The Monkey King 3 
(Mandarin w/ Chinese & English subtitles)

The third installment of the blockbuster fantasy series sees the return of the Monkey King (Aaron Kwok) in his most action-packed adventure yet! While continuing their epic journey to the West, the Monkey King and his companions are taken captive by the Queen of an all-female land, who believes them to be part of an ancient prophecy heralding the fall of her kingdom. With a lot of sorcery and a little bit of charm, the travelers devise a plan to escape. But when their trickery angers the mighty River God, they realize they might just bring about the foretold destruction - unless they can find a way to quell her wrath.

Before We Vanish 
(Japanese w/ English subtitles)

In his twentieth film, acclaimed horror director Kiyoshi Kurosawa reinvents the alien movie as a unique and profoundly human tale of love and mystery. Three aliens travel to Earth on a reconnaissance mission in preparation for a mass invasion. Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead 
(Korean w/English subtitles)

When a series of unusual murders occurs, Detective K (Kim Myung-min) and his partner (Oh Dal-soo) are once again called upon to solve the case. Along the way, he teams up with a beautiful woman (Kim Ji-won) with amnesia and together they discover vampire bite marks on all of the bodies. As they investigate further, they begin to realize that the woman is somehow closely connected to the deaths.

In Between 
(Hebrew & Arabic w/English subtitles)

Lalia (Mouna Hawa), Salma (Sana Jammelieh), and Nur (Shaden Kanboura) share an apartment in the vibrant heart of Tel Aviv. Lalia, a criminal lawyer with a wicked wit, loves to burn off her workday stress in the underground club scene. Salma, slightly more subdued, is a DJ and bartender. Nur is a younger, religious Muslim girl who moves into the apartment in order to study at the university. When Nur's conservative fiancé visits, he is horrified by her secular friends, entreating her to hasten their marriage, leave Tel Aviv, and assume her rightful role as a wife. She refuses, and his violent rebuttal leaves all of the women shaken. Salma and Lalia also face turmoil: Lalia has found love with a modern Muslim man whose acceptance proves less than unconditional, and Salma discovers that her Christian family in a northern Galilean village is not as liberal as they claim.These three very different women find themselves doing the same balancing act between tradition and modernity, citizenship and culture, fealty and freedom..

Laavaan Phere 
(Punjabi w/English subtitles)

A young man stumbles upon a beautiful girl's Facebook profile and falls in love with her. He wants to marry her and all would've gone well if all three of his brothers-in-law would've not been pompous and blabbermouths. To add to his dismay, her soon-to-be father-in-law is also a short-tempered man and also a Police Officer in Mauritius. Will the young man be able to marry the love of his life despite all the comical complications? To learn the answers, watch this comedy drama directed by Smeep Kang.
