Deadpool, Logan, and Back to the Future: What to see on the Canada Day long weekend

At last, it’s finally here, the best long weekend of the year! Naturally we have a soft spot for our nation’s birthday. Those of us that aren’t taking advantage of the extra day off to chill at a cottage or campground are stoked to enjoy local festivities including, of course, fireworks!

But we confess, the main reason we love all long weekends is the opportunity to see more movies! And this weekend has a bumper crop to choose from, whether you’re hanging out with friends, taking the kids out for a treat, or spending quality time with your Significant Other. Read on for our recommendations on what to see!

If you’re kicking back with your squad

Deadpool & Logan: Canadian Heroes Double Feature

For one weekend only, you can celebrate two of Canada’s most famous superhero exports back to back! Deadpool is of course portrayed by Vancouver-born Ryan Reynolds in this smash hit from last year, while Logan tells the story of the Canadian-born mutant Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman.

Former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson adopts the alter ego Deadpool after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

If this limited special feature is showing near you, gather your allies and get ready to relive two of the most critically-acclaimed superhero movies of all time! Get pumped up with the original Deadpool trailer and click here for more info:

Wonder Woman

In case you somehow haven’t yet seen this phenomenal superhero film – and even if you have – the long weekend is the perfect opportunity to get your squad together and take in the highest-grossing live action film directed by a woman! Raised in a sheltered island paradise, Diana, Princess of the Amazons (Gal Gadot), decides to leave her home when a downed pilot (Chris Pine) tells of a massive worldwide conflict raging in the outside world. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

If you’re taking the kids

Cars 3

What better way to mark the Canada Day weekend than by watching Edmonton native Nathan Fillion voice a role in this Pixar sequel! Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of new friends and old.

Back to the Future

For one day only, we’re bringing you Back to the Future as part of our Family Favourites program! What better way to mark Canada Day than by introducing the kids to the movie that made humble Canuck Michael J. Fox a bona fide worldwide movie star. When teenager Marty McFly (Fox) is blasted to 1955 in the DeLorean time machine created by the eccentric Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), he finds himself mixed up in a time-shattering chain reaction that could vaporize his future - and leave him trapped in the past. Back to the Future is an unrivaled adventure that stands the test of time.

The Big Sick

Already one of the most buzzed-about movies of the year, The Big Sick tells the (mostly) true story of how Kumail Nanjiani, a Pakistani-American comedian, met and fell in love with his wife Emily V. Gordon (played in the film by Zoe Kazan). As they navigated the challenges of culture clashes, Emily fell seriously ill, leaving Kumail to deal with the crisis alongside her parents. Both genuinely funny and truly heartwarming, it’s a story you won’t soon forget. It’s only in limited release but we’re sure that won’t last, so if you can, be one of the first to catch the hottest rom-com of the summer!

Baby Driver

The only movie with more advance praise and critical buzz than The Big Sick is Edgar Wright’s latest film, Baby Driver. In this movie from the writer/director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs the World, A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom. We are super stoked for this film, and hope to see you at the theatre!
