FIRST LOOK: See Lily James as Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella
It may not hit theatres until 2015, but Walt Disney Pictures is giving us a first look at their upcoming live-action version of the classic fairy tale.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring relative unknown Lily James ("Downton Abbey", Wrath of the Titans), the production began filming yesterday at London's Pinewood Studios in London.
The film is also set to star Cate Blanchett as her wicked stepmother, Helena Bonham Carter as her off-kilter (naturally) fairy godmother, and Richard Madden ("Game of Thrones") as her very handsome and aptly-named Prince Charming. Frequent Branagh collaborator Derek Jacobi is on-board here as the King and Holliday Grainger ("Great Expectations," "Anna Karenina") and Sophie McShera ("Downton Abbey) are along for the ride as the infamous stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella.
The story, adapted for the screen by Chris Weitz, will fairly faithfully follow Disney’s 1950 cartoon version, but with a few twists. Think Disney meets Ever After.
Director Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”
Cinderella will be released on March 13, 2015.

While Branagh finds himself more and more behind the camera, don't count him out of the acting game just yet. In fact, you can see him back in his Shakespearean element this October as National Theatre Live broadcasts his on-stage performance as Macbeth across the world, including dates in Cineplex theatres.
