The Canadian comedy star is having a standout year, topped by his hilarious new movie, featuring Jacob Tremblay and a cast of other well-meaning kids testing out what it means to be “bad.”

’s characters are not typically known for their grown-man life skills (they’re more likely to be experts on all things video games and weed), yet off-screen, the Vancouver-born actor is at the top of his game. Not only has he starred in some of the year’s biggest pictures, but he’s also leading a Hollywood empire, the production company behind titles such as This Is the End, Long Shot and, now, Good Boys.

It may be surprising to consider how big a star Rogen has become — after all, he’s managed to maintain his goofy stoner vibe while low-key taking over Hollywood. So what’s his secret?

Step one: Keep your friends close

Rogen has been friends with his creative partner Evan Goldberg since they were 12 (their production company, Point Grey Pictures, is named after the high school they attended), and over the years they have collaborated on writing and producing films. He’s had plenty of other allies along the way, too. Rogen hit the jackpot with his first television series, Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks. Apatow went on to mentor Rogen and gave him his first leading-man role in the 2007 comedy Knocked Up. Rogen continued to collaborate with co-star James Franco in blockbuster comedies, including 2008’s Pineapple Express, and other projects (who could forget the Kanye WestKim Kardashian parody “Bound 3,” in which a topless Rogen straddles Franco on the back of a motorcycle?).

Step two: Take charge of your story

It was his so-called “cancer comedy,” 50/50, that inspired Rogen to get into producing. The story of a 20-something guy diagnosed with cancer is not exactly summer blockbuster material, but the film made $41 million off a reported $8-million budget. Rogen has continued to focus on producing mid-budget comedies, such as This Is the End, Sausage Party and the Neighbors movies. He seems to be on to something.

Step three: Keep your (uniquely Canadian) cool

Humble, self-deprecating humour is pretty much a prerequisite for Canadian stars, and Rogen is exemplary at staying true to his roots. He fangirls after Beyoncé like the rest of us, and despite hitting number five on iTunes for his rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” with the superstar, he apologized to her on Good Morning America for “having to share credit with me.”

Need further proof? He landed a GQ cover story but was more excited that his dog, Zelda, was in the photos too. And he still has time to follow the popular Twitter account of his mom, Sandy Rogen (when she recently got verified, he tweeted, “My mom is officially my mom!”).

Step four: Try new things

Rogen’s influence extends beyond the movie biz — he branched out by promoting his own strain of cannabis in B.C. and Ontario under the Houseplant brand, and he uses his celebrity status to engage millennials in fighting Alzheimer’s disease through the organization Hilarity for Charity. Next up? He plans to publish a collection of essays in 2020.

Whatever he takes on, Rogen always maintains his boyish charm — Good Boys promises to offer up his characteristic low-key humour for grownups who haven’t forgotten how fun it is to be a kid.
