The evolution of Pepper Potts in the Iron Man films — from “Girl Friday” to a heroic character in her own right — was progressive for superhero movies at the time (and for comic books conceived before ‘feminism’ was a household word). Potts isn’t afraid to speak her mind and always stands on equal footing with her live-in hero.

We spoke with Paltrow about her role in Iron Man 3, one in which she was thrilled to see Pepper’s relationship with Tony develop to explore deeper emotional issues. “I really love their relationship in this one,” she says, “it really evolves.”

“From day one, when [Robert Downey Jr. and I] started working together on the first Iron Man, we just had a real ease with each other”

Power couple

“The relationship part of this movie is very sweet,” Paltrow says. “There’s something very real about it. You see Pepper and Tony a few years into their relationship and you see some of the issues caused by his behaviour, his obsessions, but you see their love of each other and how they work through it.

The chemistry between Paltrow and Downey is palpable, which she says has been there since the moment they stepped on set.

“From day one, when we started working together on the first Iron Man, we just had a real ease with each other. We have a very close friendship, and we work in a similar way. I love his very off-the-wall, improvisational style, and I can keep up with him and he likes that.

“We have fun, you know, and luckily with him it’s super easy. I feel very lucky when I am on set with him.”

On-screen romance

The relationship of Tony and Pepper is central to the MCU movies. But In the original Iron Man comic books Pepper Potts was never involved with Tony Stark but with Stark’s chauffeur and assistant, Happy Hogan, who’s played by Jon Favreau in the Iron Man/Avengers films. On paper, Pepper elopes with Happy and they eventually leave Stark Industries. We just can’t imagine the films without Tony and Pepper’s super-powered romance!
