Hidden Figures and Fences come out on top at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
Last night, the Screen Actors Guild shook up the awards race.
The awards ceremony that solely honours actors, and that is voted by actors, often lines up with the choices the Academy will inevitably make at the Oscars. While certain categories have been deemed "locked up" for most of the race, SAG diverted from some of those near-certain winners and therefore have us going into the Oscars a little less certain than we were before.
The top prize at the SAG Awards honours the Best Ensemble in a motion picture. Many believed Moonlight would win this, especially with La La Land not in competition, as it likely missed the nomination seeing as its cast mainly features only two actors. However, it was a rather major surprise when Hidden Figures instead took the top prize, awarding its cast members Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Mahershala Ali, Kevin Costner, Jim Parson, Kirsten Dunst, Glen Powell and more. Worthy of mentioning, Monae and Ali were also both nominated as part of the cast of Moonlight, so it's a little bit of a win/win.
Moonlight losing here only weakens its Best Picture chances, but also shows the huge support for Hidden Figures, which now may be considered an underdog for the Best Picture Oscar.
Another big surprise was when Fences' Denzel Washington took Best Actor over Casey Affleck, who has won this award from pretty much every other awards body all season for his performance in Manchester by the Sea. This may truly affect the Best Actor race at the Oscars, because typically whoever wins this award at the SAG will also take home the most coveted statue of them all.
In the Best Actress race, Emma Stone took the SAG home for her performance as Mia in La La Land. While we would say this pretty much ensures she'll also win the Oscar, her biggest threat, Isabelle Huppert, missed the SAG nomination. We still believe it's a two person race between Stone and Huppert on Oscar night.
